MECH.5960 Mechanics of Composites

Prof. Maiaru teaches Mechanics of Composites every Spring semester.

The main goal of this class is to develop a strong understanding of the mechanics of composite materials; derive orthotropic stress-strain relations and failure criteria for a broad range of composite materials; establish a strong understanding of the role of constituents in the overall response of composite lamina and how a set of laminae with different orientations affects the overall laminate properties and response.

These concepts are applied to analyze and design fiber-reinforced composites for engineering applications. In this class, students are also exposed to cutting-edge integrated composite design methods that involve the study of different length scales. Understand material characterization techniques for composites at relevant length scales and learn about different modeling techniques at each scale and their related validation via experiments through a hands-on project experience.

Textbook: “Stress Analysis of Fiber-Reinforced Composite Materials“, Micheal W. Hyer. DEStech Publications. ISBN: 978-1932078862. Note: The 3rd edition will be used in class. However, editions 1 and 2 are substantially similar and will be acceptable for class content.
